Discouraging Kids Health News Parents Need to Know

by Jeff Wise on April 13, 2012

Whenever your child turns on the television, they are in danger of being negatively influenced. Those who advertise and market to your kids are usually not promoting products that will help them, but that will actually harm children. This scary kids health news should be considered by parents.

Advertisers and marketers realize that the average child in America sees 55 commercials every day, or approximately 20,000 a year. Many of these ads are for unhealthy, sugary or MSG-filled foods. With these commercials, they can have a large impact on your child and the choices they make.

They also know that kids have a large influence on their parents. If a child really wants a certain sugary food, all it takes is persistence in many cases and the child eventually gets what he wants. This isn’t always a bad thing, but it can be.

If you want to see how much your child is affected by ads, sit down with them the next time they watch TV. When food commercials come on, ask your kids how it makes them feel. Do they crave the food? Oftentimes food commercials are accompanied with bright colors or cartoon characters to attract kids.

Teach your child the importance of not giving in to every temptation. The foods they are convinced to eat are most likely not healthy. They are full of toxic ingredients that harm the body. Kids need to learn that food is meant to fuel the body, not harm it.

Strive to make your family a disciplined family when it comes to food. This goes for the parents too. In order to be healthy, you all must be able to say no to unhealthy foods.

Parents also must practice self-discipline when it come to their kids. As parents, we love our children dearly and want nothing more than to make them happy. But, we must remember that we’re in control and sometimes what makes them happy will harm them. Do what is right for your child instead of just giving in to their every desire.

If you or your kids have trouble giving in to temptations, come up with ways to avoid ad persuasions. Don’t watch so much TV. Mute the TV or change channels during commercial breaks. Do whatever it takes to keep your kids healthy.

Scary kids’ health news such as this can be discouraging for parents. But, remember that it’s not the advertiser’s job to take care of your kids. It’s the parent’s job. Make the right choices for your kids and you can feel good that you are taking care of their bodies.
